Dissertation for the degree of Doctor of General Medicine

    Introduction:

Investigation of the mental health status of students who are young and active members of the society and have a special position in the society is very important and since entering the university leads to major changes in a person's life It is considered a very sensitive stage. In the present study, the mental health status of Qom University of Medical Sciences students in the academic year 2019-2019 has been examined in various fields and levels.

    Materials and methods:

This is a descriptive-analytical (cross-sectional) study in which 790 students of Qom University of Medical Sciences in half a year The second academic year of 1389-1990 was examined through the census, of which 688 valid cases (225 men and 463 women) were obtained after the loss of 102 samples. After completing the relevant questionnaires (GHQ28 mental health status questionnaire and researcher-made questionnaire containing demographic information), data were extracted and analyzed. Then, in order to compare the results of the GHQ28 test with the SCL90 test, 100 samples were randomly selected, so that 50 samples had disorders in the GHQ test (score 23) and 50 samples had no disorders (score 23) in this regard. The results of this research show that 37.8% of students are exposed to mental disorders and factors such as gender, marital status, native or non-native, the distance of the place of study from the place of residence, field of study, semester and level of study have an effect on the mental health of students, but among the hypotheses, only the field of study and the semester of study had a significant relationship with their mental health.

Social functioning and depression were also found to have a statistically significant relationship between academic semesters despite the presence of physical symptoms and depression.

Among the nine comparisons of the SCL90 test, paranoid thoughts were the most frequent and psychotic states were the least frequent among the 100 examined samples. The two tests confirm each other to some extent.

    Conclusion:

Given the results of the research and the increase in mental problems and the number of suspected mental disorders in students, it seems necessary for the authorities to pay more attention to solving the mental health problems of students and activating the student counseling center in order to prevent the wastage of energy and abilities of the young and active segment of the society. to be implemented Also, due to the high level of disruption in the students' social functioning, it seems that this case also needs more follow-up. Problem):

One of the axes of the health of different societies is the mental health of that society. Mental health plays an important role in ensuring the dynamism of any society (1).

The World Health Organization considers health to be complete physical, mental and social well-being. When a person is in a state of complete health, when health is provided in all three dimensions of a person's existence (2).

The concept of mental health is actually an aspect of the general concept of health. The experts of the World Health Organization define mental health as follows: (Mental health is the ability to communicate harmoniously with others, change and improve the individual and social environment, and resolve conflicts and personal desires in a logical, fair and appropriate way) even though mental health is a concept It is widely used, but a general definition that is accepted by everyone has not yet been obtained. Each person or group has a specific idea of ??mental health. If there is no such situation regarding physical health (3). For example, Kameo believes that every person with mental health is a person who is free from any anxiety and symptoms of disability, and when a person's emotional, social and physical health is complete when he has the ability to communicate with others and also the capacity to deal with life's problems, therefore, he has divided mental health into the following aspects: (individual improvement), (lack of anxiety), (lack of disability symptoms), (ability to communicate with others), (capacity to deal with problems and pressures) life) and according to Karl Meninger, mental health is an individual's compromise with the world around him as much as possible in such a way as to cause happiness and a useful and effective perception completely (4).

But the criterion of mental health in the religion of Islam is used under the title of growth and as self-righteousness, guidance, salvation, reform and perfection. Achieving maximum growth, which is synonymous with evolution, in fact, the philosophy of life, from the point of view of Islam, is the result of faith in God. In Islamic texts, the manifestation of mental disorder is considered as a disease, and when there are signs of disconnection from reality in a person, the word "mad" has been proposed, which exempts a person from performing religious duties and even deprives him of interfering with his property (5). Mental illnesses are not specific to a stratum or class and include all social classes (6).

Studies conducted on mental disorders show that the statistics of mental disorders are increasing in most societies, so that the World Health Organization has predicted that by 2020, mood disorders will be the second most common disease in the world (7).

Since in the process of growth and development Cultural, social and economic societies, human resources have a fundamental and decisive role, today experts believe that one of the important reasons for the development of advanced countries is the attention and efforts of their governments in training creative and effective human resources. Students are the chosen human force in terms of talent, creativity and perseverance, and the spiritual resources of every society and the builders of the future of their country. Therefore, it is expected that this group can be capable, useful and effective people for the country in the shadow of large investments that are spent on them from education to university. But the undeniable fact is that these investments cannot fulfill those expectations without paying attention to the mental health of society, especially students. Paying attention to this point is important from the point of view that entering the university brings about a major change in social, family and individual life and is considered a very sensitive phase. During this period, a person faces many changes in social and human relations. In addition to these changes, we should mention new expectations and roles that are formed at the same time as entering the university. Being in such a situation is often accompanied by pressure and stress, and it affects people's performance and productivity. Therefore, paying attention to the mental health of this group is of special importance in learning and increasing their scientific awareness (8, 9).

A review of the conducted research shows that the prevalence and severity of mental problems in students has increased compared to the non-student population. Recent surveys indicate that 46% of male students and 64% of female students suffer from anxiety, and 12% of male students and 15% of female students suffer from depression. University counselors have reported an increase in student referrals from 1995 to 2000 from 2.4 per 100,000 to 9.7 per 100,000 (10).

In his research, Ashton Kamali concluded that second-year students suffer from high levels of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse (11).
