    Master's Thesis in Dramatic Literature

    Abstract

In this thesis, the characterization of evil in screenwriting based on Islamic thought is examined. The purpose of this review is to reach a style in characterizing that is more compatible with Islamic thinking about evil. The method of this research was observation and library and by using relevant sources, it was done through taking a plug. Characterization was investigated from different aspects, using available sources.

The study case of this thesis was the television series Masoomut, and since it seemed that the style, ideas and methods of Propp and Grimas and the model of activists in characterization were close to the study case, they were specifically addressed. Islam is present in the characterization of evil, but there are many commonalities, and by examining both, we depicted the villains of the TV series Masoomit Lost.

Keywords: characterization, evil, screenplay, prop, grimace.

    Introduction

Essan gradually moved from telling stories to showing stories and formed the theater, after that he turned to film and nowadays most of the stories are shown with film, of which the script is the main and preliminary stage and is written by the screenwriter. The field of screenwriting was also created for this purpose.

Drawing characters through film has many differences with drawing characters in literature and verbal arts. In the screenplay, the screenwriter must force the characters to show us what they think and feel. According to many experts, drawing characters in cinema is the most difficult type of characterization. (Mehring, 1376)

The devil in the cinema is usually a manifestation of creating terror, temptation, deception, ugliness and sometimes destruction. A dramatic story platform, which is the battlefield of good and evil, needs a hero and an anti-hero, and as we say, it wants a bad person and a good person. Generally, in "evil" films, the devil is the antagonist of the story and in these films, "evil" plays a very important role.

The devil and evil characters in cinema often have undisputed power, and this power is rooted in the supernatural nature of the devil. Sometimes it sinks into the skin of humans and sometimes into the skin of animals or objects, it crosses the boundaries of time and space and can take any form. Therefore, the hero of the story has a very difficult and sometimes impossible task to face him and overcome him. At the same time, these characteristics make the devil possess many visual and dramatic appeals, which makes him always a customer among screenwriters and filmmakers.

This treatise intends to examine the characterization of evil based on Islamic thought. First, the topics of characterization are discussed from different aspects, then the approach of Islam towards the identification of evil is examined, for this purpose, on an example; The TV series of Masoot lost innocence is being worked on. Statement of the problem

In this thesis, we are going to give a definition of evil, characterization and the combination of the two and examine what evil means in our religious culture, how it appears and how it shows itself in an artwork, what is a character or a hero, what is characterization, is characterization different in a dramatic text than a script. What are the correct principles and methods for creating a suitable character (good and evil) or a positive or negative hero in a screenplay or a TV series? First, we examine the coordinates of evil from the Islamic and Shiite texts and find out the border between human agency (the same characters of the series Masoomit Lost) and the evil of the devil. We want to see if evil only has a symbolic language and if there are other tools to show it or not. We have used the theories of Grimas and Propp to find the evil characters in the television series Masumit lost, and we have determined their functions based on the same theories. Each character is placed in the script for a specific purpose. Creating and establishing personality is like discovering different views, interests, tastes, needs, behavioral patterns and reactions.(Mehring, 1376)

A story can be considered as an expression of a real or unreal story that is based on a goal and an idea and has three main elements: subject, character and dialogue. During it, a mystery is raised or a knot comes, and at the end, that mystery is solved and the knot is untied. There are different types of stories, real (realistic) and unrealistic (such as legends and fairy tales). The story elements are: plot, character, action and dialogue. Meanwhile, the character is the most important element of a story or fictional work, it is the main focus of the story, which gives existence to the story with its actions. (Dagheh Chi Firouzjaei, 2016)

In this thesis, the characterization of evil based on Islamic thinking is discussed based on the model of activists.

Given that the thesis should be related to a specific topic, therefore, it is tried to firstly give a general overview of evil and evil people based on Islamic thinking, and then the study case of this thesis, the TV series Masumit al-Rashid, will be addressed.

The practical result of this thesis will not be to make evil or evil people similar to what is mentioned in Islamic thinking, of course it can be, but more important and more practical than that, it is to be able to present characterizations of evil, in any form and format, even a small object, towards Islamic goals and with an Islamic approach.

    1-2. Necessity of research

Today, many television series present stories with themes of good and evil and try to portray Satan based on our religious culture. Therefore, how to correctly and proportionately represent these concepts based on a scientific research with a sign-semantic approach seems inevitable.

Until now, no research with this title (characterization of evil based on Islamic thought) has been done. And that in this research, an attempt is made to arrive at Islam's approach to the problem of evil by using Islamic and Shiite thinking and the theories of Propp and Grimas and use it in screenplays and television series to portray evil.

    1-3. Research objectives

    Main objective

    - Who are the evil and the evil people based on Islamic and Shia thought?

    - Who are the characters of evil in the TV series Masumit Lost and how are they? have been shown?

    - What is the theory of Propp and Grimas in characterization?

    1-5. The use of research

How to use Islamic concepts and themes in the appropriate and acceptable portrayal of good and evil characters in television series and how to introduce the right characterization in our series and show good and evil to the audience through it.

It gives screenwriters and directors tools and elements in the field of characterization of evil and evil people, which is in line with the Islamic approach and is in the direction of the goals of Islam.

1-6. Keywords and definition of concepts

Characterization: making and dealing with the character in a story, show or movie. (Anuri, 1381, 44-62) created people (creatures) that are used in stories and plays. They appear, they are called characters. A character in a narrative or dramatic work is a person whose mental and moral quality is present in his actions and what he says and does. The creation of such characters, which appear to the reader in the field of fiction, almost like real people, is called characterization. (Mirsadeghi, 1385, 84)

Character: 1 0 set of internal characteristics and social behaviors of a person. 2. The set of characteristics of a human being. (Moin, 1381, 575)

The character in the screenplay is the person on whom the story happens or who creates the story himself and is the basic foundation of the screenplay.
