Investigation of the relationship between mental health and academic progress in a group of middle school girls

Taking into consideration the employment status of mothers, Shiraz 2013

    Abstract:

The present study, in order to investigate the relationship between mothers' employment and mental health and the academic progress of girls among middle school students. Guidance has been implemented. The statistical population of this research consists of female secondary school students in Shiraz. The number of statistical samples is 200 people who were selected by multi-stage cluster sampling. The method was used in this research. Of the type of causal correlation and comparison that. It is to identify the relationship between variables and convert them into values. JDI questionnaires were used to determine mothers' job satisfaction in their work environment and GHQ questionnaires were used to examine the mental health of adolescent girls in two groups of working and non-working mothers. In order to confirm or reject the hypotheses, independent samples t-test and multivariate regression analysis were used. The obtained results showed that the t value in calculating the difference in general health averages in two groups of girls with working mothers and housewives in the case of unequal variances is equal to (-0.87), which is not significant according to the degree of freedom (197.223), up to the level (P?0.05). Therefore, there is no significant difference between the general health of the group of girls with working mothers compared to girls with stay-at-home mothers. And by comparing the average level of academic progress in the two groups (the group of girls with working mothers is equal to 19.35, the group of girls with housewives mothers is equal to 18.82), it was observed that the scores of the educational progress of girls with working mothers are significantly higher than girls with housewive mothers. And that the level of satisfaction of working mothers with their work cannot make a linear combination that predicts the general health error and the educational progress of girls with working mothers.

Key words: mental health, educational progress, mother's employment

    Introduction:

It is a complete belief that health is one of the great blessings in human life, and it cannot be denied that health is among the highest blessings (Milan Farr, 2012). The concept of mental health is actually an aspect of the general concept of health. The World Health Organization defines health as follows: the state of complete physical, mental and social health, not just the absence of illness or disability. Some people have thought that the opposite of mental health is mental illness, while this is not the case, and the concept of mental health is much broader than this (Khodarahimi, 2014).

According to Skinner[1], a healthy person is a person whose behavior is in accordance with the rules and regulations of the society and when he faces a problem. By using the method of behavior modification, he acts to improve and normalize the behavior of himself and those around him. According to Rogers [2], a person has mental health, is flexible, does not have prejudice, feels freedom and creativity (Skinner, 1965). Mental health in two forms, the absence of mental illness and the feeling of satisfaction and enjoyment of life, is of interest to many specialists and experts in this field. (Theodore [3], 2001). It is wise to deal with problems, compromise with the social environment based on scientific and ethical standards, and finally faith, work and responsibility, following the principle of charity and benevolence (Shafiabadi and Naseri 1365).

World Health Organization experts have defined mental health as follows: the ability to communicate harmoniously and harmoniously with others, change and modify the individual and social environment, resolve conflicts and personal desires in a logical, fair and appropriate manner (Milani Far, 1374).

Definition of mental health is a set of methods, interactions and interactions that guide us in the direction of providing individual and collective mental health and protect us from mental illnesses. Although various definitions have been made in this matter by experts, it is observed that often in expressing the criterion of balance and mental health, points such as the ability to adapt to oneself and the environment, flexibility and recognition of one's spatial and temporal situations. have emphasized (Shalchi, 1380, Mehrdad, Younis, 1386

Mental health and perfection is used with the concept of mental health. In this understanding, mental health does not mean the absence of disease, it is meant to show a positive state and mental health (Hosseini, 2008).

There is an important stage in the cycle of human psychological development that is between childhood and adulthood and it is common to the adolescent period. In the adolescent, along with the physical changes, a series of transformations in feelings and emotions, desires and wishes, imaginations, and desires, imaginings and imaginations occur and disrupt the balance of childhood and increase the possibility of behavioral disorders in this period. The self-liberator acquires new perspectives and skills at every stage. The successful transition from childhood to adolescence, which requires a fundamental change in the concept of "self", is not an easy task (Shafi Abadi). Without a doubt, adolescence is considered one of the most important and sensitive periods of human life. In this period, human identity is evolving, although the previous periods of development are considered to be its foundation. Therefore, careful educational investment on the development of childhood to adolescence will play a very important role in the formation of a worthy identity, so that the future of the mental health of the individual is guaranteed. Familiarity with the psychological characteristics of adolescents and the special problems of this period can help parents to better communicate with their adolescents (Aghamohammadi, 2014).

Since adolescents are one of the vulnerable sections of society, attention to their mental health and educating them for a better future Society is necessary and necessary. Teenagers who have good mental health and academic progress are more successful, and this has a positive effect on the progress and future of society. A very wide range of individual, social, family and cultural variables are related to educational progress. In fact, it can be said that for today's societies, proper education is considered to be one of the main goals for parents and policy makers in order to achieve higher social, occupational and economic positions, and the criterion of the effectiveness of education is the academic progress of students. Therefore, knowing the different dimensions of educational progress and the variables related to it is the first and main step for this goal. The family is considered the first educational center of children and the child spends a significant amount of time in it. In the family, the members are in mutual relationship with each other. But one of the best and most important relationships that exist is the relationship between mother and child. Meanwhile, the relationship between mother and daughter is more important, because they can be each other's best friend and love each other passionately. Mother is the first role model that has a tremendous impact on a girl's life. In today's society, where mothers have to spend hours of their time because of their employment outside the home, therefore they are with their children. In some countries, it is believed that working women causes harm to their children. However, a look at the research shows that the children of working mothers have more self-esteem and less behavioral disorders than the children of stay-at-home mothers. Women's employment as a social phenomenon affects the education of their children (cited by Tabatabai et al., 2013). 1-2 Statement of the problem:

Mental disorders have existed since the beginning of mankind and no one is immune to them, and this is a danger that constantly threatens mankind. During the 20th century, human life has been transformed and changed more than in the entire history. A lot of effort for industrialization, the expansion of urban life and machine life has had negative effects on people's health and has created new issues about health and disease, the social, economic, political, cultural disorder and environmental-social-psychological problems have created many morbid reactions in people.  The World Health Organization defined health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease (World Health Organization, 2001 and 2004). Unfortunately, for a long time, no significant progress was observed in the application of these perspectives in the scientific and practical realms (Pourafkari, 2013). Mental health plays an important role in ensuring the dynamism and efficiency of any society (Sadeghian, Heidrianpour, 2009[4]).

People who are suffering from emotional disturbances for some reason and their mental health is weakened, express their disturbances in different ways.
